Why classical music education?
Classical music is the only kind of music that gains worldwide acknowledgement as “Art Music” or the Indonesian call it “ Musik Seni”, instead of “Seni Musik”. What is the difference? ”Seni Musik” is 1 of many other kinds of arts as carving and painting among others, that focus on aesthetics, while “Musik Seni” adds on the aesthetics the scientific factors as Mathematics, Logic, Philosophy, and Architecture, summarized all in one term “Theory of Music” and Musicology.

An irrevocable fact in all over the world proves that classical music is the only music that is studied formally and hence earning degrees from Bachelor, Master and Doctor. The rest of music, including all the genres, is entertainment or amusement music.

SPRING CONCERT 2009

THE 58th CONCERT OF SURABAYA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
SPRING CONCERT 2009

Surabaya Symphony Orchestra held the 58th performance entitled “Spring Concert 2009” at the Ballroom of Shangri-La Hotel in Surabaya. For local residences and regular SSO concert goers will know that it was the 1st SSO concert in the year of 2009. Since the founding year, 1996, SSO has always begun its whole year concert with Spring Concert in April. Opera arias, German Lieder, Broadways, Sacred Songs, Symphony and the masterpiece Beethoven Piano Concerto No 1 in C Major Op. 15 in 3 movements played by an Australian guest pianist who is also a senior teacher from Melbourne University- Mr. Glenn Riddle- are the programs performed that night. The emotion of Beethoven was brilliantly exposed by the excellent collaboration between the pianist and the conductor, Mr. Solomon Tong. The term “to expose the emotion of Beethoven” here should be understood as the vividness of the orchestra to interpret the strong emotion of Beethoven. The 2nd movement was played in fantastic heart-breaking sentimentality.
At 19:00 local time, the presenters invited Mr. Suwadji Widjaja – Founder of Surabaya Symphony Orchestra – to deliver the opening speech in front of approximately 800 audiences. Afterwards, the concert was started with 2 choral songs entitled “How Great is God’s Love”, a sacred song by Taiwanese composer Shu Shi Xian and Sanctus” by C. Gounod.
The next was “Farwell Symphony” the very unique last movement “Finale” by J. Haydn, conducted by Christian Xenophanes Suryantara, was performed. A very odd scene was seen in this particular program: one by one the musician left the stage and went back stage, an expression done in accordance with the title.
In every concert, as a commitment of SSO to its school of music, SSO provides some times for its potential students to perform on stage in order to show their latest progress in music. As an opening to this part, an a cappella song entitled “Lift Thine Eyes” from the oratorio “Elijah” by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy and then proceeded by Surabaya Symphony Orchestra Student String Ensemble conducted by Daniel Chandra, performing “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by G.F. Handel. As the closure, solo piano performance was presented by Like Gunawan playing Waltz op. 64 No. 2 by F. Chopin.
SSO Quintet - Lily Indrawati Wongso, Nenetwati Juwono, Adi Setiado, Henry Gunawan and John Kang – melancholically sang a broadways song “Mama” composed by Kotecha and Larrosi.
An 83 years of age gentleman named Tan Siek Miauw – the owner of PT Wings Surya Tbk – together with Mrs. Russy Sutanto performed a duet: “Nessun Dorma” from “Turandot” by G. Puccini, and a Spanish song “Granada”.
Coloratura Soprano Pauline Poegoeh amazed the audience by singing 3 arias: “O Zittre Nicht” from the opera “Die Zauberflöte” and “Bester Jüngling” from the opera “Impressario”. Both arias were composed by W.A. Mozart. The 3rd song “Brindisi” from the opera “La Traviata” by G. Verdi with the highest tone at high F really entertained the audience.
Dewi Endrawati sang a German Lied by R. Schumann entitled “Widmung” beautifully and poetically. Sam W. Tong sang an aria from the opera “Die Zauberflöte” entitled “Der Vogelfänger” by W.A. Mozart lightly and playfully, exactly the content of the song. The sound of flute and oboe alternately represented birds chirping, giving the natural forest-like atmosphere. The Baritone voice helped people felt the beauty.
As the closing program at Spring Concert 2009, Surabaya Oratorio Society Choir sang 2 majestic pieces: “Heil Sei Euch Geweihten” from the opera “Die Zauberflöte” by W.A. Mozart and “Worthy is the Lamb that was Slain” from “Messiah” by G.F. Handel with its polyphonic style, the style of Baroque era that is difficult to sing. However, they sang them very well and thus ended the concert in grandeur.
Very unsurprisingly, the Sweden Honorary Council, Mr. Villy Nielsen, congratulated the Conductor, Mr. Solomon Tong. Also the US Council of Surabaya, Ms. Caryn R. McClelland, complemented the concert as the best of SSO Concerts.
